Automotive power steering systems are designed to help drivers turn steering wheels with less effort (torque), especially when vehicles are not moving or moving at a very slow speed. They have experienced several stages such as hydraulic steering, electric & hydraulic, and electronic power steering (EPS) systems. EPS systems are the most advanced ones and have been widely used in modern vehicles. Apart from the benefit of facilitating driving, EPS systems bring a series of additional advantages such as power saving, environment friendly, and easy installation. [+MORE]

An EPS system is mainly composed of sensors, actuators, and MCUs. When a driver turns a steering wheel, a torque sensor detects turning torque and an angle sensor monitors rotation angle of the steering wheel. These data, together with other inputs such as vehicle’s speed transmitted from ECU (Electric Control Unit) through CAN bus, will be sent to MCU to calculate required assisting torque and to control motor’s rotation angle. A current sensor and a position sensor are mounted on motor to provide feedback for the control module to monitor rotor position and motor torque in real time. The system contains two processors. When the primary MCU is down, the secondary MCU immediately disables EPS system and activates mechanical steering mode to ensure a safe driving.[-LESS]
